« "My paintings are not just paintings. Throughout my career, they have been what I am thinking and what I am experiencing at the time I work. They are my body.". »

Sunil Das (1939–2015) was a dynamic Indian modernist painter and graphic artist known for capturing raw power and kinetic energy, earning him a prominent place in post-modern Indian art. Born in Calcutta, he achieved initial fame during his time at the Government College of Art and Craft and later refined his technique in Paris on a French government scholarship. His artistic identity is indelibly linked to his prolific drawings of horses and bulls. His fascination began with sketching horses at the Calcutta Race Course and stables, leading to an iconic phase where he famously claimed, "I must have done 7000 horses between 1950 to 60." His time in Spain further inspired his bold, graphic depictions of bulls. Das rendered these animals not as decorative subjects, but as primal symbols of untamed spirit, aggression, and speed. Using strong, gestural strokes, often in charcoal or bold ink washes, he focused on the rhythm and tension of the moving form, often leaving figures spectral or abstracted. Beyond his animal studies, Das courageously explored the darker facets of urban life, including the anguish of marginalized communities in Calcutta and macabre human figures. Regardless of the subject, he saw every creation as a self-portrait, stating: "Everything I do is only a transformation of myself." His work is a powerful, restless testament to the raw expression of inner experience.
