Painter | India
Born in 1964
Neeraj was born in Patna, in 1964. The art of Neeraj Goswami reflects the state of the art in India as it grew over the last fifty years. He grew up in Delhi at the age of eight and was groomed to be an artist since then even though his family had little means to support such an ambition. His work reveals the gradual growth taking place on the surface of his canvases with ever-increasing clarity of thought. His palette and simplified rendering of meditative humans, together with portray a unique tradition in Indian art in which spiritual feeling predominates. Tradition and modernity of painterly style co-exist in his art that carefully conceals his complex method of applying paint and drawing lines, leaving only a surface of infinite bliss. Neeraj has shown his works almost in all parts of the world and has retained his childhood habit of receiving critical accolades since, at the age of five, his drawing of an elephant on a large blackboard in the primary school received headline-space in a Patna Daily. Neeraj completed his education at the Delhi School of Art. He earned both a Bachelor’s and Masters degree and has been feted by the Government for his significant contribution to art. He was honored with a solo show in his school days in Delhi and won considerable attention from veterans like Saradindu Sen Roy and Gulam Rasool Santosh before entering Art College in Delhi. His solo took place while he was still in an art college. He has 10 solos between 1990 to 2000 held almost annually in Delhi and, predictably enough, catapulted him in the prime frontier of the mainstream Indian Art of the day. Neeraj received the Bharat Bhavan Award at the Second Biennial of Contemporary Indian Art in the year 1988. He was also awarded the Lalit Kala Research Grant Fellowship in the same year.
