Francis Newton Souza was an Indian artist known for his Expressionistic paintings depicting people and landscapes. His work features similar coloristic and graphic traits to the paintings of Paul Klee, and other German Expressionists. Born on April 24, 1924 in Goa, India, he was raised Roman Catholic by his mother, who worked as a seamstress. After losing his father at a very young age and being afflicted by a serious bout of small pox, he vowed to go about life his own way. Souza was expelled for participating in the Quit India Movement while studying at the Sir J J School of Art in Mumbai. In 1947, he founded the Progressive Artists' Group along with S H Raza, M F Husain and K H Ara, among others. An articulate genius, F.N Souza augmented his disturbing and powerful canvases with his sharp and provocative prose. Souza went on to attend St. Xavier’s College in Bombay but was expelled for drawing graffiti on school property. : Today, Souza’s work is in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. Though he spent most of his life after 1967 in New York, Souza died March 28, 2002 in Mumbai, India. Souza’s works were part of several successful exhibitions around the world. His works are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, London and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
