Narayan Shridhar Bendre Place of Birth: 21 August 1910, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India Place of Death: 19 February 1992, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India ( 82 years) Narayan Shridar Bendre is an award-winning Indian Artist whose paintings constitute one of the most important bodies of work in modern Indian art. Bendre’s range covered not only landscapes and figurative paintings, but also experiments with abstraction, cubism and expressionism. Bendre’s work is seen to have blended traditional Indian painting with modes in European modern art, creating a unique style of painting individual to himself. Along with his contemporaries in Bengal and Gujarat, he also helped to establish two of the most significant schools of painting in Indian modern art. As such, his influence on Indian painting has been immense. In 1936, Bendre began working for the government of the kingdom as a painter and a journalist. For the next 3 years, he travelled across Kashmir painting landscapes and the people of the Kashmir valley. In 1940, Bendre moved to Mumbai and embarked on a career as a professional artist. He worked as a Free Lancer painting portrait and was even an art director in Chennai for a short period. In 1947, he travelled to Newyork to exhibit his work at Windermere Gallery, In America, Bendre studied western print making techniques. In 1948, Bendre joined the progressive artist group and began to experiment with styles and aspects he had encountered on his travels. Bendre was also inspired by the newly acquired independence of India and participated actively for the bright future of India.
