Artist Suhas Roy was known for his Iconic Radha Series. Born in 1936 in Bangladesh, Roy had studied at the Indian college of Arts and Draftsman Ship. Thereafter, he went on to study graphic art under SW Hayter at Atelier 17, Paris and Murals at Lecole Superiecure des Beaux Arts, Paris. He also studied Murals at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He was the principal of the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship and retired as a professor of painting from Santiniketan’s Kala Bhavan. Also, a member of society of contemporary Artists from 1960. His “Jesus” in mixed media is in the collection of the Vatican. The story of how he went on to be fascinated with painting Jesus is intriguing. Roy had travelled to Southern Europe for a month and had seen the six pietas of Michelangelo. Moved by this experience, he started drawing a couple of images of Jesus Christ in different Media. On the occasion of the exposition of St. Francis Xavier in Goa, held once every 10 years, Roy had done a painting of Jesus. In this work, he had depicted the face of Jesus portraying pain and agony. The painting caught the attention of Vatican City representative. It is now a part of prestigious collection of the Vatican, a rare honor for any artist. His Portraits of Radha, the mythological character, has become the most talked among Indian artists. They exude a fine mix of beauty, grace, elegance and simplicity with a quality of inhabiting a dream like world that can oscillate between sensuality and innocence. Besides, Suhas Roy also has his contributions on glass paintings. In the countless canvases of Radha and the glass paintings that art collectors treasure, Roy work as an artist will live on. Suhas Passed away in 2016.
