Vasudeo S.Gaitonde was regarded as one of the India’s foremost Abstract painters. (Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, colour and line to create art). ″A quiet man and a painter of the quiet reaches of the imagination", who has the appearance of an intellectual, literally simmering with some unexplored thought. He rejected application of the word abstract to his work and instead referred to it as “nonobjective”—an entirely personal encounter on canvas. Gaitonde’s paintings, often compared with those of many well-known Western artists. Greatly influenced by Zen Buddhism and calligraphy Gaitonde’s paintings are known for their spiritual work and believed that is as meditative as it is eternal and momentous. The plain, large surfaces of layered paint possess an inherit quality of light. Impressed by his work, Vasudev was invited to join the Progressive Artists’ Group founded in 1947 by artists K.H. Ara, S.K. Bakre, H.A. Gade, M.F. Hussain, S.H. Raza, and F.N. Souza. The group, based in Mumbai, aimed at breaking away from all clichéd representations in Indian art.
