Prabha came to Bombay as a struggling artist, with little money. She and her artist husband B.Vithal were aided by friends who gave them a place to stay and to store their art work. she went on to path of success when three of her paintings were acquired by eminent Indian scientist Homi J.Bhaba. Portraits of rural Indian women, landscapes of rural India or paintings that eloquently depict social and economic issues like drought, homelessness and hunger immediately reminds artist Prabha. Working mostly with oil on canvas, Prabha’s trademark style of long, elongated figures with each canvas in a single dominant colours is instantly recognizable. Prabha once said that her aim was to “paint the trauma and tragedy of women”. A Stance that is commendable for a time when Indian women were rather oppressed. She Passed away in 2001 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Education • Sir J.J. College of art Mumbai, Maharashtra. Exhibitions Her work has been shown in over 50 exhibitions in India and abroad. Below are some places where her work was displayed • In 1956, She had a 2 person show with her husband B.Vittal in Mumbai • In 1959 and 1961, She had solo shows in New Delhi • In 1993, She had a solo exhibition, “Shradhanjali” In memory of her late husband in Mumbai • In 1957. She participated in a group show in New Delhi • In 1958, She participated in Bombay state art exhibition in Mumbai where she received an award • In 1996, She participated in “Contemporary Indian Painters 1996” at Jahangir Art Gallery in Mumbai Posthumous exhibitions • In 2008 and 2011 she was exhibited in Mumbai • In 2008 she was showcased in “Winter Moderns” at Aicon’s Gallery at New York • In 2011, She was exhibited in group shows in New Delhi; Indigo Blue Art Singapore and Rubin Museum or Art, New York. • In 2012, She was showcased in “ Art for Humanity” at Coomaraswamy Hall Mumbai • In 2016, Prabha was showcased as a part of a Group Show titled as “ The Melting Pot”
